Who can benefit from Convalescent Care?
People recovering from surgery
Post-operative recovery is one of the most common reasons why people arrange Convalescent Care at Home. Whether you or your loved one has had a hip or knee replacement, cardiac surgery, abdominal surgery or a cataract procedure, the weeks following an operation can be physically and emotionally challenging. A Home Carer can provide Personal Care services, as well as help with meal preparation, medication management, dressing changes and mobility support – freeing you to focus entirely on healing. Convalescent Care following surgery is focused on achieving specific recovery goals over a set period so that you or your loved one can regain independence and return to daily life as quickly as possible.
People recovering from a fall or fracture
Falls, broken bones and hip fractures are amongst the most common reasons older people are admitted to hospital. Research shows that recovery at home with the right level of extra support can be just as effective as hospital care and may reduce the likelihood of needing long term residential care.2 Your Home Carer can help with mobility, reducing fall risk around the home and providing the reassurance that someone is always on hand.
People recovering from a stroke
For those recovering from a stroke, the environment in which rehabilitation takes place matters. Remaining at home surrounded by familiar people, routines and belongings supports both physical recovery and emotional wellbeing during what can be a lengthy and challenging process. Our Carers work in partnership with your medical team and other medical professionals to provide the daily support that keeps recovery on track. Find out more about our Stroke Care service.
People recovering from a serious illness
Recovering from a serious illness such as pneumonia, sepsis or a significant infection can leave people feeling weak and vulnerable. NHS Gloucestershire has highlighted that once the acute phase of an illness is over, hospitals are not the best place for recovery as surroundings are unfamiliar, mobility is limited and getting good sleep is harder – all of which slow recovery.3 The same can be said for a care home, where surroundings are unfamiliar. Convalescent Care provides the daily support needed while you or your loved one rebuild strength in the comfort of your own home.
Older people following a hospital discharge
Older adults are particularly vulnerable to what’s known as “hospital acquired deconditioning” – the physical and cognitive decline that can develop during a hospital stay. Research has shown that between 30% and 55% of older patients experience a decline in the ability to perform activities of daily living such as bathing, getting dressed and toileting during a hospital stay and up to 65% experience a decline in their ability to walk.4 After Hospital Care can support you or your loved one to regain the ability and confidence to perform these tasks at home.

For families, it offers the peace of mind that their loved one is being looked after by a trained professional throughout their recovery.

How much does Personal Care cost?
Personal Care costs do vary according to the type of care needed, the number of care visits and where you live. To learn more and to get a personalised quote, find your local Team.
Why should I choose Home Care vs a care home?
Home Care is great for those who wish to remain in the comfort of their home but need extra support. Moving into a residential care facility can be daunting and many prefer to remain in a familiar environment surrounded by special memories. Home Care also provides personalised support that’s conducted in a manner to suit your needs and preferences. Unfortunately, care homes can’t provide the same level of dedicated and personalised care. In a care home, staff attention is shared between multiple residents. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and what you think would work best for you. Read our guide comparing Home Care with care homes.
How does Careena Homecare compare to an introductory agency?
Introductory agencies are not regulated and quality cannot be guaranteed. We provide fully regulated services that are inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). We also provide full and exclusive training for our Care Workers, whereas private Carer and agency Carers may not have comprehensive training. In addition to this, our services are also backed up with central support; this means you can count on us even if your Care Worker needs time off as our local Team can step in to ensure continuity of care.
