How much does Dementia Care cost?

It’s important to understand how much and what type of care your loved one needs when choosing Dementia Care as this will affect how much it costs. We provide a wide range of senior care services to support your loved one with the activities of daily living. This includes specialist care for dementia that’s designed to help your loved one manage the symptoms they may experience.

How much does Live-in Dementia Care cost?

If your loved one requires round the clock support, you may be considering Live-in Care or a care home. The cost of these options is often a key deciding factor.
Live-in Care for dementia is often considered a suitable and cost effective alternative to a care home, enabling your loved one to stay in familiar surroundings. This can sometimes be more suitable for someone with dementia as the upheaval of moving and living in an unfamiliar place can cause additional distress. Live-in Care for couples is particularly cost effective when compared with the cost of paying for two sets of care home fees.
In addition, choosing Live-in Dementia Care means that the value of the home will be disregarded in assessing your loved one’s eligibility for financial help from the local authority. This allows your loved one to keep their home as an asset

We always work with families and relevant health professionals to make informed decisions each step of the way.

Funding Dementia Care

Dementia is a progressive condition; many people with dementia will need care at some point. The care required will be different for each individual, depending on their needs. To understand your loved one’s needs, it can be helpful to request a care needs assessment from the local authority. This will unveil whether they have eligible care needs to receive funding to help with the cost of Dementia Care.
There are various funding options your loved one may be eligible for. While we have included an overview of some of your options below, please note that Careena Homecare is unauthorised to provide financial advice. Before considering your funding options, it is advised you obtain professional advice from a registered advisor with the Financial Conduct Authority.

NHS Funding

If you or your loved one has complex health needs and requires continuous support, you may be able to receive funding for Live-in Care from the NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) scheme. This is a package of support provided outside of a hospital and arranged and funded by the NHS. Find out more by visiting the NHS Continuing Healthcare website.
Your eligibility will be determined according to the continuing care framework, which considers:
  • What help you need
  • How complex your needs are
  • How intense your needs can be
  • How unpredictable they are
  • Any risks to your health if care is not provided

Local Authority Funding

You may qualify for some level of funding from your local authority. You can apply to have a Financial Assessment from your local council to see if you qualify for financial support. If you qualify, the local authority for your area will contribute to your care.
Generally, if your assets are greater than £23,250 then you will have to pay for the cost of care yourself. However, you may still be eligible for state benefits, depending on your personal circumstances and needs.
You can find out more by contacting your local authority’s social services department.

Personal Independence Payment

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a state benefit that helps cover extra costs for living with a long term health condition. It’s available for people between 16 and State Pension age who have:
  • A long term physical or mental health condition or disability
  • Difficulty doing everyday tasks or getting around
PIP is tax free and you are eligible to receive it whether you work or not. It’s not means tested so how much you earn is irrelevant.
PIP is made up of two parts; Daily Living for help with everyday tasks, such as eating, washing and getting dressed and Mobility for help getting out and about. For more detailed information on Personal Independence Payment, visit the UK Government website.

Lifetime Mortgages

Lifetime mortgages allow homeowners to access equity in their property whilst retaining ownership. They are a special loan, available to homeowners aged 55+, usually for the rest of their life.
You can borrow money against your home as a lump sum or as regular income. Unlike traditional mortgages, lifetime mortgages do not involve repayments. Instead, interest is added so the amount owed accrues. The loan is repaid when the borrower dies or moves into long term care. In this instance, the property is then sold and the loan repaid.
The main advantage is that the homeowner can access equity in their property without selling. However, interest is added to the loan, so the amount of equity in the property reduces and this impacts inheritance.

Home Reversion Plans

Home reversion plans are a type of equity release. They allow homeowners to sell some of their home to a reversion company for a lump sum or regular income. The homeowner continues living in the home, rent free, for the remainder of their life or until moving into long term care.
When the property is sold, reversion companies receive the agreed percentage while the homeowner or beneficiaries receive the remainder. The amount depends on the amount sold and the current property value.
This allows homeowners to access equity without selling their home or making repayments. As with a lifetime mortgage, the main disadvantage is the amount of equity left in the property is reduced which affects inheritance.

Comparing the cost of Dementia Care with…

Sometimes, costs can be the deciding factor when choosing between Home Care and moving into a care home. Home Care is a cost effective alternative to a care home, allowing you to receive daily help whilst living as independently as possible in a familiar environment.

Care Homes

Often, there are many monthly fees associated with a care home, including accommodation fees as well as the cost of food and specialist Dementia Care.
As dementia can be complex and symptoms require tailored support, care homes typically charge a premium rate for Dementia Care. These extra costs on average are around 15% but can go up to 40% in some cases.
However, in home Dementia Care costs only charge for the services your loved one receives. Your loved ones stay in control of their care plan and daily routines. In a care home, staff attention is usually shared between residents whereas Home Care provides one to one care.

Private Carers

Although sometimes a private Carer may appear a cheaper option, they may not be the best choice for your situation.
Dementia Care requires specialist training to understand the condition and how to provide the correct support. Private Carers don’t always receive the extensive care provided by most Home Care providers.
You’d also have to assume the responsibility of recruiting and performing background checks on a private Carer which can be complicated. Our Recruitment Teams will take care of this for you and ensure all Carers have undertaken an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and all our services are monitored by the CQC for added security.

Live-in Care

If your loved one requires continuous 24 Hour Care at Home, Live-in Care may be a more suitable option compared to visiting care.
The cost of Live-in Dementia Care pays for a Carer to move in with your loved one to provide support at any time it’s needed. They’ll live with your loved one and be on hand whenever they’re required throughout the day or at night.
As a result, the cost will inevitably be higher than visiting Dementia Care. It’s important to fully understand your loved one’s care needs before deciding which option is most suitable. If they only require help with getting ready for the day, visiting Dementia Care may be more cost effective than paying for Live-in Care.
